THE NUN (2018) SCARY FILM REVIEW
After Annabelle (John R. Leonetti, 2014) and Annabelle: Creation (David F. Sandberg, 2017), James Wan’s attempt to widen The Conjuring Universe’s storytelling area is now coupled with the presence of The Nun. Like Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation – which delve deeper into the storytelling of one of the supernatural characters present in the storyline of The Conjuring (Wan, 2013), The Nun also gives its audience a wider narrative angle regarding one of the characters. a supernatural being named Valak who was originally shown – and attracted attention – in the story presentation of The Conjuring 2 (Wan, 2016). Directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow, 2015) based on a story script written by Gary Dauberman (It, 2017), thenunmovie is able to present a gripping horror atmosphere even though it fails to tell a sharper story due to the blandness and indecisiveness of the object of this film’s overall storytelling. whole.
Background story in th. 1952, The Nun begins its story when Father Burke (Demián Bichir) is assigned by the Vatican to go to Romania accompanied by a Catholic novitiate, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), whose role is to investigate the mystery of the moment of suicide of a nun, Sister Victoria (Charlotte Hope), who knows is an act that is forbidden in Catholic teaching. Assisted by one of the local people, Maurice Theriault (Jonas Bloquet), the mystery envelops after the three of them arrived at the old convent in Sister Victoria’s area to commit suicide. The investigation carried out by Father Burke and Sister Irene further revealed a dark moment that took place at the monastery in the past which led to the death of many nuns and at the same time made the area haunted by a supernatural being. It didn’t take long for Father Burke and Sister Irene to come face to face and try to fight this supernatural figure.
The make-up artist for The Nun, Eleanor Sabaduquia, created Valak’s scary face with a painting technique. The rest she just uses simple techniques like applying prosthetics to cover the eyelash area. Because it uses hand painting techniques, there is no makeup application that looks too much the same in different shooting sessions
Because the nuns used black cloth so much, the production team of The Nun had to face a problem because the cloth factory in Romania that they used had run out of stock of black cloth.
